Thanksgiving Week at Disney World: My Honest Plan for the Busiest Week of Fall
If you are going to Disney World over Thanksgiving, you already know what people say: it is packed. And honestly, they are right. But it is also one of the prettiest weeks of the entire year, because the holiday decorations are up, the air finally feels like fall, and the whole place smells like cinnamon. I have done this week a few times now, and the trick is not fighting the crowds. It is working around them. 🍂
A quick reality check on crowds
Not every day of Thanksgiving week is the same. In my experience:
- Sunday and Monday are the calmest days of the week. If you have travel flexibility, this is when you do your must-do park.
- Tuesday and Wednesday ramp up fast as everyone arrives.
- Thanksgiving Day itself is busy, but mornings feel noticeably lighter because a lot of people sleep in or eat a big midday meal.
- Friday and Saturday after Thanksgiving are the heaviest days of the whole week. I treat those as resort days, Disney Springs days, or half days at most.
If you only remember one thing: front-load your trip. The first half of the week is your friend.
The day-by-day rhythm that works for me
I plan mornings hard and afternoons loosely. Here is roughly how it goes.
Be at the tapstiles 45 minutes before the posted opening time. During holiday weeks, that is not dramatic, that is necessary. Parking lots and security back up, and the monorail and Skyliner lines get long early. If you are staying on property, use Early Entry for that extra 30 minutes. It is worth more during Thanksgiving week than almost any other time of year.
Book Lightning Lane Multi Pass the moment your window opens. Resort guests get 7 days out, everyone else gets 3. For this week specifically, I grab Jungle Cruise, Peter Pan's Flight, and Big Thunder at Magic Kingdom, or Slinky Dog Dash, Tower of Terror, and Mickey and Minnie's Runaway Railway at Hollywood Studios. Keep refreshing after you tap in, because better return times pop up all day.
Take the afternoon off. Between about 1pm and 5pm, every park hits its peak. That is nap time, pool time, or resort hopping time for me. Then I come back for the last three hours, which are genuinely the best hours of a holiday week.
If you missed the 60 day dining window
The 60 day mark for Thanksgiving week passed back in September, so if you are reading this without reservations, you are not out of luck. Here is what actually works:
- Check the app at 6am and again around 9pm. Cancellation penalties hit at those edges and tables appear.
- Use the walk-up waitlist in the My Disney Experience app right when the park opens. I have gotten into Sci-Fi Dine-In and Mama Melrose this way.
- Look at resort restaurants instead of in-park ones. Steakhouse 71 at the Contemporary, Whispering Canyon Cafe at Wilderness Lodge, and Ale & Compass at the Yacht Club are much easier gets than anything inside a park.
- For an actual holiday meal, Liberty Tree Tavern and Garden Grill at Epcot both serve a family-style Thanksgiving-ish feast year round, so even a normal reservation feels festive.

What I wear that week
Late November in Florida is genuinely unpredictable. I have had 82 degrees on Tuesday and 52 degrees on Thursday morning. My formula: a short sleeve top, a light cardigan or flannel you can tie around your waist, and jeans or a midi skirt with shorts underneath. Closed toe shoes, because the walkways get cold and crowded.
For ears, this is my favorite week to wear something subtly holiday: plaid, a deep green velvet pair, or anything with a little sparkle that works for both the Christmas tree on Main Street and your dinner photos. I keep a running list of my favorites on the ears page.
One thing I would skip
Fireworks on Friday or Saturday after Thanksgiving. The viewing areas fill up over an hour early and the exit is genuinely rough. If you want to see them, do it Sunday through Wednesday instead and save your weekend evenings for a quiet resort walk. Wilderness Lodge and the Grand Floridian are already decorated and nearly empty at night. That is the version of Thanksgiving week I love most. ✨
