Resort Hopping for Fall: The Disney Hotels Worth an Afternoon in October

October is my favorite month to resort hop. The parks are busy, the afternoons still get warm, and there is something really nice about ducking into a quiet lobby for an hour instead of sweating through a 50 minute standby line. Disney does fall decor at the resorts better than people realize, and most of it is free to walk through.

Here is how I plan a resort hopping afternoon in October, including transportation (no car needed) and what I actually order at each stop.

First, the rules of resort hopping

You can visit any Disney resort as a guest. Where people run into trouble is parking. If you drive up to a deluxe resort without a dining reservation, you will likely get turned away at the gate. So I almost never drive. Instead I use the parks as my hub:

  • Monorail resorts (Contemporary, Grand Floridian, Polynesian): hop on the resort monorail at the Magic Kingdom Transportation and Ticket Center or at Magic Kingdom itself.
  • Wilderness Lodge and Fort Wilderness: take the boat from the Magic Kingdom dock.
  • BoardWalk, Beach Club, Yacht Club, Swan and Dolphin: walk out the International Gateway at EPCOT or take the boat.
  • Riviera and Caribbean Beach: Skyliner from EPCOT or Hollywood Studios.

Plan your hopping around your park day and it all gets easy.

Wilderness Lodge: the most fall place on property

If I could only do one, this is it. The lobby is all timber and stone with a giant fireplace, and in October it genuinely feels like autumn even when it is 86 degrees outside. Walk the back path toward the Villas, then grab a seat at Geyser Point Bar & Grill overlooking Bay Lake. I get the bison burger or just a drink and the view. Roaring Fork is the quick service if you want a cheaper snack.

Boat from Magic Kingdom, about 15 minutes, and the ride itself is lovely.

Fort Wilderness: the October secret

This is my favorite October tip on this whole list. Campers at Fort Wilderness decorate their campsites for Halloween, and many of them go all out with lights, inflatables, fog machines, and themed golf carts. Take the boat from Magic Kingdom around dusk, then walk or take the internal bus through the loops. It is completely free and it feels like the best neighborhood you have ever trick or treated in. Grab something from P&J's Southern Takeout or Crockett's Tavern while you are there.

Grand Floridian: for the lobby and the pastries

The Grand Floridian puts out a seasonal display in the lobby and there is usually live piano going. I grab a pastry from the bakery counter at Gasparilla Island Grill, sit on the second floor balcony, and listen for a while. If you want something nicer, Enchanted Rose is a gorgeous lounge and rarely feels rushed in the afternoon.

Polynesian: the reliable snack stop

One stop further on the monorail. Pineapple Lanai has the Dole Whip, and the walkway along the Seven Seas Lagoon is a great place to sit. If you can get into Trader Sam's Grog Grotto, the interactive drinks are worth the wait. Put your name in and wander the lobby while you wait.

Animal Kingdom Lodge: worth the bus

This one takes effort because it is a bus ride, but the savanna viewing areas are open to visitors and you can see giraffes and zebras from the lobby overlooks. Go late afternoon when the animals are more active. If you plan ahead, book Sanaa at Kidani Village for the bread service. It is one of the best value appetizers on property. More resort notes over on my hotels page.

What I wear for a hopping day

Resort hopping means air conditioning, boats, and a lot of walking on nice floors. I go with a comfortable dress or a skirt and a soft tee, real sandals instead of flip flops, and a light cardigan I can stuff in my bag. For ears, this is when I break out a fall color set (rust, burgundy, a little pumpkin) instead of a park character pair. It photographs beautifully in those lobbies.

If your trip has an afternoon with nothing scheduled, this is what I would do with it. Build it into your itinerary and thank me later.
