My Resort Hopping Day: How I Spend a No-Park Day at Disney World
If you're doing a longer trip in August, I really think you should build in one day with no park at all. Not a sit-at-the-pool-all-day day (although that is also lovely), but a resort hopping day. You ride the monorail, you ride the Skyliner, you eat at places you'd never squeeze in on a park day, and you go home actually rested. 🌴
I did this on my July trip and it saved me. Here's how I plan it.
First, the rules nobody tells you
A few practical things before you build an itinerary:
- Driving to a resort is tricky. Guard gates ask why you're there. A dining reservation gets you in, and so does staying there. Without one, you may be turned away, especially at the Grand Floridian and Polynesian. If you're not staying on property, park at Disney Springs or the TTC and use Disney transportation from there.
- Pool hopping is not a thing. Resort pools are for guests of that resort (DVC members have limited hopping privileges). Don't plan your day around someone else's slide.
- There are no direct buses between resorts. You connect by monorail, Skyliner, boat, or by routing through a park or Disney Springs. Build your day around resorts that are already connected to each other and it goes much smoother.
The monorail loop day
This is my favorite version and the easiest to explain to a friend.
Morning: Start with breakfast at Kona Cafe at the Polynesian for Tonga Toast, or 1900 Park Fare style table service at the Grand Floridian if you want something slower. Then walk the Polynesian, get a Dole Whip at Pineapple Lanai, and just sit in that lobby for a while. It smells incredible.
Midday: Monorail to the Grand Floridian. There's usually a pianist or a band in the lobby, and Gasparilla Island Grill is a solid quick lunch if you want cheap and easy. Then keep riding to the Contemporary, walk up to the fourth floor, and look at Magic Kingdom from the walkway. Steakhouse 71 does an excellent burger if you'd rather do lunch there.
Late afternoon: Boat or bus over to Wilderness Lodge. Geyser Point Bar & Grill is my pick for a drink and the bison cheeseburger, and you get shade and a breeze off the water. This is the part of the day where the heat stops mattering.
Evening: Back to the Polynesian for Trader Sam's Grog Grotto. Get there right when it opens or plan to put your name on the list and wander. Then watch the Magic Kingdom fireworks from the Polynesian beach. No park ticket, no crowd, no walking back through Main Street.
The Skyliner version
If you're staying on the Skyliner line, do this instead. Breakfast at Topolino's Terrace at Riviera (book this, it's worth it), then ride the Skyliner to the Caribbean Beach hub and out to Art of Animation just for the giant Lion King and Little Mermaid courtyards. Come back for lunch at Primo Piatto at Riviera, which is one of the best quick service spots on property. In the evening, walk the BoardWalk, eat at Trattoria al Forno or Ale & Compass over at Yacht Club, and see the EPCOT fireworks glow from the water.
I have more on how the resorts connect to each other over on /hotels, and my dining picks are on /dining.
What I wear
This is the day I dress like I actually want to be photographed. No ride restraints, no coaster hair, so I go with:
- A flowy midi dress or a linen set, something that reads vacation rather than park day
- Real sandals instead of sneakers, because you're walking way less
- Statement ears. A big bow, a floral pair, something that would get squashed in a Space Mountain seat. This is their day. My picks are at /ears.
- A crossbody bag instead of a backpack, and a light cardigan for the very aggressive lobby air conditioning
One tip if you only do part of it
Even if you don't want a full day off, tack a resort evening onto a half day. Leave the park at 4, shower, and go have dinner somewhere with a view. It feels like a whole extra vacation day. I put an example of that into a few of the sample plans on /itinerary.
August is the perfect month to try this. You are not missing a ride you'll regret. You're going to remember sitting on that beach. 💛
never miss a park update ✨
