My Disney Ears Playbook: How I Pick Them, Wear Them, and Keep Them On All Day

I get more questions about ears than almost anything else, and honestly that tracks. They are the easiest way to make an outfit feel like a park outfit, and they are the souvenir I actually use again. But I have also worn ears that gave me a headache by 11am and lost a pair on a coaster, so I have opinions now. 🎀

Here is my full ears playbook, from picking a pair to keeping it on your head.

Comfort comes before cute (usually)

I say usually because I am human and I have absolutely bought sparkly ears that hurt. But if you are wearing them for a 12 hour day in Florida, three things matter:

• Headband width. Wide, flat headbands spread pressure out. Thin plastic ones dig in right behind your ears after a few hours.
• Ear weight and height. Big structured bows and tall ears catch wind and tip backward. Sequin and soft fabric ears sit lighter.
• Wire versus fixed ears. Wire ears you can bend flat are so much easier to pack and to shove in a bag on a ride.

In late August I lean toward lighter fabric or sequin pairs over anything plush. Plush ears are adorable in December and miserable in a 93 degree afternoon.

The comfort hacks I actually use

• Two bobby pins, crossed. One on each side, crossed into an X over the headband and into your hair. This is the single best thing I have ever done for ears.
• A thin comfort sleeve. Some pairs come with a padded band. If yours does not, a strip of moleskin or a velvet ribbon wrap on the underside helps a lot.
• Take them off during your break. I pull mine off for lunch and again during my afternoon resort break. It resets the pressure point completely.
• Ears do not shade you. They are not sun protection. In summer I still bring a hat or an umbrella and swap to ears for photos and nighttime.

Where the ears come off

This is the part I wish someone had told me. Any ride where a cast member says to secure loose items, assume your ears are a loose item. I take mine off and stash them in my bag for:

• Slinky Dog Dash, Rock 'n' Roller Coaster, and Tower of Terror at Hollywood Studios
• TRON Lightcycle Run, Space Mountain, and Big Thunder at Magic Kingdom
• Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind and Test Track at EPCOT
• Expedition Everest at Animal Kingdom

And for water: Tiana's Bayou Adventure and Kali River Rapids will soak sequins and warp cardboard backing. I either leave those pairs at the hotel or bag them before I board.

Packing and protecting them

I clip a small carabiner to my park bag and hook my ears on it when they are off. It keeps them from getting crushed at the bottom of the bag. For travel, wire ears fold flat between clothes, and structured pairs go in a packing cube on top of everything else. If a pair is really precious to me, it just does not come to the parks.

Sweat happens. I spot clean the inside of the band with a little gentle soap and water on a cloth and let them air dry overnight. It genuinely extends their life.

Where I shop for them in the parks

The Chapeau on Main Street has the classic wall of ears. Creations Shop at EPCOT usually has the widest current selection. Keystone Clothiers and Adrian & Edith's cover Hollywood Studios, Island Mercantile is my Animal Kingdom stop, and World of Disney at Disney Springs has the biggest inventory of all if you strike out in the parks.

My rule: buy the pair you keep walking back to. You will regret the pass, not the purchase.
