Mickey's Not-So-Scary Party Nights: My Hour-by-Hour Plan for October

October party nights are my favorite thing on the whole Disney calendar, and I say that as someone who loves Food & Wine. Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party is a separate ticket at Magic Kingdom that runs roughly 7:00 PM to midnight on select nights through October 31, and the whole reason it works is that the park empties out first. Fewer people, cooler air (relatively), and rides you'd normally wait 70 minutes for.

The trick is that five hours sounds like plenty and then disappears instantly. Here's the plan I actually use.

Get in at 4:00, not 7:00

Your party ticket lets you into the park starting at 4:00 PM. This is the single biggest thing people leave on the table. That's three free hours inside Magic Kingdom before the party even starts.

Go straight to a cast member near the entrance or in the hub for your wristband, then head somewhere useful. I like to knock out Seven Dwarfs Mine Train or Peter Pan's Flight in that window because those two have the worst waits later, and honestly the party crowd does hit them too.

One thing to know: Lightning Lane Multi Pass is not included with a party ticket. If you're only in the park on the party ticket, you're doing standby the whole night. That's fine. Standby after 9:00 PM is genuinely short.

7:00 to 8:00: characters first

Character lines are the one thing that gets worse as the night goes on, not better. If there's a specific meet you care about, do it right at 7:00.

The ones worth lining up for:
- Jack Skellington and Sally near Memento Mori. Longest line of the night, every night.
- The Seven Dwarfs in Storybook Circus. All seven, only at the party.
- Villains near Prince Charming Regal Carrousel and in Frontierland
- Moana, Tiana, and the Pooh characters in their Halloween looks

Pick one or two. Not all of them. I promise you will not get all of them.

8:00 to 9:30: first parade or rides (pick one)

The Boo-To-You parade runs twice, usually around 8:15 and again closer to 11:00. Skip the first one. Watch the late parade instead, when half the park has gone home and you can walk up to a curb ten minutes before.

So during that first parade, ride things. Big Thunder, Haunted Mansion, Space Mountain. Waits drop dramatically while everyone is standing on Main Street.

If you do want the first parade, watch it from Frontierland near the Country Bear Jamboree side. The Headless Horseman gallops through a few minutes before the parade starts, and Frontierland is way calmer than Main Street.

9:00ish: fireworks and the stage show

Disney's Not-So-Spooky Spectacular is the party fireworks show and it's beautiful. I watch from the hub slightly right of center, near the Casey's side, so I can slip toward Adventureland after.

The Hocus Pocus Villain Spelltacular runs a few times on the Cinderella Castle stage. If you have to choose, I'd take the fireworks and catch a later showing of Hocus Pocus.

Treat trails: do them while walking, not as a destination

The candy stations are scattered all over, marked with signs and glow sticks. Do not make a special trip. Just stop at whatever trail you pass on your way somewhere. Bring a tote or a drawstring bag because the little party bags fill up fast.

If you have food allergies, look for the teal BOO! bags. You hand them in at a designated station and swap for allergy-friendly treats. Cast members will point you to the right spot.

Merch and last calls

Party-exclusive merch sells out. If there's a spirit jersey or a pair of ears you want, buy them at 4:00 PM when you walk in, not at 11:00. You can use package pickup or just carry them.

Rides stay open until midnight and the last hour is the best ride hour of the entire year. Seven Dwarfs at 11:40 PM with a 20 minute wait is a real thing that happens.

What to wear

Late September and October in Florida is still warm at 7:00 PM and mildly pleasant by 11:00. I wear something light with pockets, comfortable shoes I've already broken in, and I throw a thin layer in my bag for the walk back. Full costumes are allowed for all ages at the party, which is rare, so people go big. Just keep it something you can actually ride Space Mountain in.
