Hoop-Dee-Doo Musical Revue: Everything I Learned Before Booking My First Show

The one Disney World tradition I keep missing

I have a confession: in all my trips, I have never once made it to the Hoop-Dee-Doo Musical Revue. Not once. And every single person I know who has gone comes back saying it was the best night of their trip. So this time it is going on the plan, and I did a deep dive while researching it that I figured I would share.

First, a small clarification that tripped me up too. Hoop-Dee-Doo is not at Disney's Wilderness Lodge. It is at Pioneer Hall at Disney's Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground, which is the campground across Bay Lake. The two are neighbors and connected by boat, so people mix them up constantly. If you are staying at the Lodge, you are in great shape (more on that below). 🌲

What it actually is

It is a two hour dinner show that has been running since 1974. Six performers called the Pioneer Hall Players do a Wild West vaudeville routine with corny jokes, musical numbers, washboards, and a healthy amount of audience participation. If you get picked, you get picked. Go with it.

The food is all-you-care-to-enjoy and served family style in buckets right to your table:

• Fried chicken
• Smoked pork ribs
• Cornbread
• Tossed salad
• Baked beans
• Mashed potatoes and corn
• Strawberry shortcake for dessert (it gets its own song)

Unlimited beer, wine, sangria, and soft drinks are included in the price, which genuinely makes the cost make more sense. Ask for more of anything and they will bring it. Allergy and vegetarian options are available, but request them when you book so the kitchen is ready.

Booking: what I wish I had known sooner

Reservations open 60 days in advance and this one books up fast, especially holiday weeks. It is prepaid at the time of booking, so treat it like a ticket rather than a normal dining reservation, and read the cancellation window before you confirm.

There are three showtimes (typically 4:00, 6:15, and 8:30 pm) and three seating categories:

• Category 1: main floor, closest to the stage, highest price
• Category 2: main floor sides and rear, plus front balcony
• Category 3: balcony sides, lowest price

Here is what I heard over and over from people who have gone: Pioneer Hall is small, and there is not a bad seat. If Category 1 is gone, book Category 3 and do not feel bad about it. If you want to be pulled into the show, sit downstairs.

I am leaning toward the 6:15 show so we can get there early and still catch what happens afterward.

Getting there (build in extra time)

Fort Wilderness is one of the trickier spots to reach, so do not cut it close. Plan for 60 to 75 minutes of travel.

• From [Magic Kingdom](/parks/magic-kingdom): take the boat to Fort Wilderness Landing. It docks right near Pioneer Hall and it is the prettiest way to arrive.
• From Wilderness Lodge or Disney's Contemporary Resort: boats run between the lake resorts, easy and scenic.
• Driving or rideshare: you arrive at the Outpost near the entrance and take an internal bus to the Settlement Depot. That internal bus is the part people underestimate.

Get there early. Crockett's Tavern is right next door for a drink, the Tri-Circle-D Ranch horses are nearby, and the Electrical Water Pageant floats past the Fort Wilderness beach around 9:45 pm. There is also the free Chip 'n' Dale's Campfire Sing-A-Long over by the Meadow.

What I am wearing

This is the most fun dress code in all of Disney World and I am taking full advantage. Think denim, gingham, a prairie dress, or a Western shirt tucked into jeans. Cowboy boots if your feet can handle it, sneakers if they cannot. A Jessie-inspired look is basically the official uniform.

For ears, I am going with something Western: Jessie, Country Bear Jamboree, or Big Thunder Mountain. Bring a light layer too, because Pioneer Hall is air conditioned and the boat ride back across the lake gets breezy at night.
