There are exactly three resorts on the Magic Kingdom monorail loop, and I've stayed at all of them. How the monorail actually works

There are three separate monorail lines, and understanding them saves you real time:

• Express line: Transportation and Ticket Center (TTC) straight to Magic Kingdom. No resort stops.
• Resort line: loops through Contemporary, Magic Kingdom, Grand Floridian, Polynesian, then TTC. This is the one you'll ride from your hotel.
• EPCOT line: TTC to EPCOT only. You have to walk between platforms at TTC to switch.

The resort line runs in one direction, so the ride length depends on where you are in the loop. From the Contemporary, Magic Kingdom is the very next stop (about four minutes). From the Polynesian and Grand Floridian, you pass through Magic Kingdom on the way, so it's quick too, but heading to EPCOT means going around to TTC and transferring.

Hours to know: the monorail typically starts running about 30 minutes before Magic Kingdom opens and keeps going roughly an hour after close. The EPCOT line starts later and shuts down earlier, so if you have a late dinner at World Showcase, plan on a bus or a Skyliner-adjacent workaround.

Contemporary: best for Magic Kingdom mornings

The monorail runs through the building, which never stops being fun. Better than that: there's a paved walking path to the Magic Kingdom entrance that takes me about 8 to 10 minutes. On early entry mornings I skip the monorail line entirely and walk.

Dining: California Grill (book it for the fireworks), Steakhouse 71, Chef Mickey's, and Contempo Cafe for quick breakfast.

Best for: people who want the fastest Magic Kingdom access and a modern, low-frills room.

Polynesian Village: best for atmosphere

Dining: 'Ohana, Kona Cafe (macadamia pineapple pancakes, please), Trader Sam's Grog Grotto, and Pineapple Lanai for Dole Whip steps from your room.

Best for: couples, relaxed evenings, and anyone who wants the resort itself to feel like a destination.

Grand Floridian: best for the splurge (and the walkway)

The Grand Floridian also has a walking path to Magic Kingdom, about 10 to 12 minutes, which makes it a true two-option resort. It's the most formal of the three, with live piano in the lobby most evenings.

Dining: Victoria & Albert's, Citricos, Narcoossee's, Grand Floridian Cafe, and Enchanted Rose for a drink.
