D23 Is Two Weeks Away. Here's What I'm Watching For

Every two years, Disney holds D23, its official fan convention, and it usually comes with announcements that change what Disney World will look like in a few years. This year's runs August 14 to 16. Here's what I'm hoping to learn.

1. The Cars land coming to Magic Kingdom

We already know a Piston Peak-inspired land is coming to Frontierland, and the construction walls have been up since Tom Sawyer Island closed. What we still don't know is when it opens and what the rides will actually be. D23 is where details like that usually land.

2. Villains Land

A land full of Disney villains was announced at the last D23, planned for the area beyond Big Thunder Mountain. I'd love real ride details and a date this time. An Ursula dark ride would make my whole year.

3. The Muppets coaster timeline

Rock 'n' Roller Coaster is set to become a Muppets coaster, but the timeline has stayed vague. If you love the Aerosmith version, ride it soon. Closing dates tend to show up quickly once they're announced.

4. Tropical Americas at Animal Kingdom

DinoLand's replacement is a new land themed around Encanto and Indiana Jones, and it should get a construction update, maybe even an opening year. In the meantime, DINOSAUR is living on borrowed time, so consider this a friendly reminder to ride it while you can.

5. Something for EPCOT

There's always one announcement nobody sees coming. My guess is EPCOT. It's been quiet there since the World Celebration area was finished, and Disney rarely lets a park sit still for long.
